May graduated with a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 2008 and worked as a postdoctoral scientist at UNSW (2008-2010), Centre for Cancer Biology, Adelaide (2012-1014) and is currently working at the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Innovative Therapies, Murdoch University.
May was trained as a molecular biologist and has experience in aptamer selection, oxidative stress and ageing, epigenetic regulation, and development of therapeutic antisense oligonucleotides. Despite some career interruptions she has managed to stay involved in research and has published work in the top referred journals, including Nature Communications. At present, she is exploring antisense therapy for diseases including multiple sclerosis and rare genetic diseases supported by Murdoch University, Orphan Disease Centre (The University of Pennsylvania), Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science (Western Australia) and Sarepta Therapeutics. She was an Executive Committee member of AGCTS from 2029-2024.
